Steam Friends Association Brienz Rothorn Bahn
The Brienz Rothorn Bahn Steam Friends Association is committed to ensuring that the wonderful steam operation continues despite many adversities and the requirements of today’s railway regulations. The railway should be preserved, maintained and flourish as a relic of times long past. It is important to the patrons’ association that the original steam railway with its beautiful locomotives does not disappear into a museum, but can be shown in daily use in summer. The fact that long-forgotten professions such as the stoker are also needed is only mentioned in passing. The challenges are great, but united and with a lot of good will and even more emotion, the patrons have been granted some real moments of happiness in recent years.
Foundation of the association in 1991
The patrons’ association was founded in 1991 by Ernst Streule to promote and maintain steam operation. To achieve this aim, the association supports the costly renovation of the steam locomotives, important refurbishments on the line, infrastructure projects, organises collections and supports advertising measures. The association forms an important basis for the railway’s five-monthly steam operation and regular use of historic rolling stock.
Third-generation steam locomotives
Frame for locomotive 12 ordered
The new frame for locomotive 12 will arrive at the workshop at the beginning of December. Until then, literally every minute will be used to dismantle locomotive 12 step by step into several hundred individual parts. This means an immense logistical and time effort for the mechanics. The total cost of building the third frame, overhauling the individual parts, and rebuilding the locomotive will amount to CHF 300,000. At present, around two-thirds of the necessary funds are still missing. With a lot of passion, hard work, and your support, Locomotive 12 will be overhauled over the winter months and will resume operation in 2026 with a new frame.
Craftsmanship and lots of paint
Investing in the future
After more than 50 years of service and countless kilometers on the mountain, all seven panoramic cars from the B3-B9 series are in urgent need of refurbishment. To save money, all work is being carried out on site in Brienz. Just over 2,000 working hours and, among other things, 100 kilograms of red paint were needed to refurbish the first two SIG panorama cars last spring. Work on the second B5/B6 composition will begin in the coming winter months. Here, too, the dull windows, all seals and hinges will have to be replaced, as will the buffers at each end of the cars. The total cost of refurbishing this train set will be CHF 180,000. The aim is to refurbish one train set each year over the next few years, thus preserving them for decades to come.
